Continuity and Fulfillment

The New Testament builds upon the Old Testament rather than simply repeating it. Jesus Himself stated, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17). This indicates that the Old Testament’s laws, prophecies, and narratives find their ultimate meaning and completion in Christ. The New Testament reveals how Jesus fulfils Old Testament prophecies, particularly those concerning a coming Saviour, and demonstrates the full expression of God’s plan for humanity.

Covenant and Law

The Old Testament centres on the covenant between God and Israel, including moral, ceremonial, and civil laws. While moral laws, such as the Ten Commandments, remain timeless principles, ceremonial and sacrificial laws pointed forward to Christ’s ultimate sacrifice. The New Testament introduces a new covenant based on faith in Jesus and grace, shifting the focus from strict adherence to the Law toward a relationship with God through Christ. Paul explains that the Law served as a tutor to lead humanity to Christ, highlighting the need for a Saviour (Galatians 3:24).

Complementary Roles

The Old and New Testaments are interconnected, offering a complete picture of God’s plan of salvation. The Old Testament provides the historical, moral, and prophetic foundation, while the New Testament reveals the fulfilment of these promises and the establishment of a new covenant. Christians are encouraged to interpret Old Testament laws through the lens of Jesus’ teachings, emphasising love for God and neighbour as the guiding principles.
