Parable of the Sower

Parable of the Sower, told by Jesus, illustrates how people respond differently to God’s word and how the Kingdom of God grows from small beginnings into something expansive and fruitful. In Matthew 13, Jesus tells the story of a farmer sowing seeds that fall on four types of soil: the path, rocky ground, among thorns, and good soil in Matthew 13:3-8. Each type of soil represents a different response to the message of the Kingdom of God:

• The path: Seeds are eaten by birds, symbolising those who hear the word but do not understand it, allowing evil to snatch it away
• Rocky ground: Seeds sprout quickly but wither because they have no root, representing people who initially receive the word with joy but fall away when trials or persecution arise
• Among thorns: Seeds grow but are choked by thorns, illustrating those whose faith is hindered by worldly worries, wealth, and distractions
• Good soil: Seeds grow and produce a bountiful harvest, symbolising those who hear, understand, and live by God’s word, yielding spiritual fruit

Jesus explains that the seed is the word of God, and the different soils reflect the condition of human hearts

The parable emphasises that spiritual growth depends on receptivity, understanding, and perseverance.
