Feeding Babies
- Genesis 21:7-8 Sarah marvels that she has “borne Abraham a son in his old age”, and the child is weaned. This passage shows breastfeeding as a normal part of early motherhood in ancient Israel.
- Exodus 2:7-9 Moses’ sister suggests finding a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby – and Moses’ own mother is hired to breastfeed him. It’s one of the clearest examples of breastfeeding as both maternal care and practical necessity.
- 1 Samuel 1:22-23 Hannah stays home to nurse Samuel until he is weaned before presenting him at the temple. This shows breastfeeding as part of a mother’s spiritual dedication.
- Isaiah 49:15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child…?” Used as a metaphor for God’s faithfulness, but it assumes breastfeeding as a universal, tender image.
