Marriage
The Bible’s message about marriage is that it is a lifelong covenant created by God, and its message about divorce is that it is permitted only in limited circumstances, treated with gravity, and always surrounded by calls to compassion, forgiveness, and protection of the vulnerable.
The Bible consistently presents marriage as a sacred, lifelong union rooted in creation.
Marriage is a covenant, not just a contract. Genesis describes two becoming “one flesh,” emphasising companionship, faithfulness, and mutual care.
God designed marriage to be permanent. Jesus teaches that what God has joined together should not be separated, pointing back to Genesis as the original pattern.
Marriage reflects Christ and the Church. Ephesians describes marriage as a living metaphor of Christ’s sacrificial love.
Mutual responsibility and love are central. Husbands are called to love sacrificially; wives to respect; both to practice mutual submission and care.
Marriage is meant to be faithful, protective, intimate, and enduring — a covenant rooted in God’s design.
