Revenge

Revenge is wrong. Why?

Old Testament

Forget about the wrong things people do to you. You must not try to get even. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. I am the Lord.

ICB Leviticus 19:18

Don’t say, “I’ll pay you back for the evil you did.”
Wait for the Lord. He will make things right.

ICB Proverbs 20:22

Don’t say, “I’ll get even with that man.
    I’ll do to him what he did to me.”

ICB Proverbs 24:29

I will punish those who do wrong. I will repay them.
    Sometime their foot will slip.
Their day of trouble is near.
    And their punishment will come quickly.”

New Testament

¹⁷ Repay no one evil for evil, but try to do what everyone regards as good. ¹⁸ If possible, and to the extent that it depends on you, live in peace with all people. ¹⁹ Never seek revenge, my friends; instead, leave that to God’s anger; for in the Tanakh it is written,

“Adonai says, ‘Vengeance is my responsibility; I will repay.’”
