“Father in heaven, source of holiness and true purpose, bless this church and sanctify it.”
The full prayer asks God to make the building:
- a place of worship
- a refuge for the poor
- a house of prayer
- a sign of God’s presence
This is part of the official Rite of Dedication of a Church and an Altar.
While the New Testament doesn’t prescribe a church‑building consecration ritual, the idea comes from:
- Solomon’s dedication of the Temple (1 Kings 8);
- The sanctifying of sacred spaces in Exodus and Leviticus;
- Jesus calls the Temple “My Father’s house”.
Many consecration prayers echo Solomon’s words:
May Your eyes be open toward this house night and day…
