Idolatry

Father Muhammad?

Yes, Zaid?

In the pagan temple, one of the boys told me that their god is a father – is that the same as our Father, the Father of Jesus?

No, Zaid. If you look inside, there’s a bronze arch, the idol of the sun goddess, the wife of Allah, who is her husband. The three pillars? They’re the daughters of Allah, the moon god and his wife, the sun goddess, Lat, Uzza and Manat. The Sun and Moon are in the sky. The Sun brings the day, and the Moon is at night. These aren’t related to Father, Son or Spirit. They’re just idols.

Al Lat, Al Uzza, Lion, Allah (Al Lah, Hubaal, Baal and Sin) and Manat, with the Sun goddess in the background arch.

You can see the pagans burning sacrifices to the idols, and the smell of burning meat pervades the air. I like to eat fruit then.

The idols outside the Kaaba are the markers for the days, Zaid, they mark the calendar. And if you look on the shadowed side, you can see the moon god marks the hour with his shadow, with its shadow, Allah is time.

Allah is time. Allah is gnomon.

Of course, we have sand timers, Zaid. Remember to turn it over.

The sands of time.

Zaid later mentions that Father Muhammad carved wood into a dove and placed it above the lectern for reading the Bible.
