Quraysh Polytheism?

What did Muhammad’s tribe, the Quraysh, worship in their polytheism? According to Koran and Tafsir Ibn Kathir, the Quraysh worshipped Allah as the chief god represented by the Moon, with three daughter goddesses controlling other aspects of reality, and Ackbar the Sun goddess, the wife of Allah, represented by the Sun.

The Kaaba in the original “Mecca”, Petra, Jordan, was the pagan worship centre for Allah and the rest of the idols:

The original Kaaba in Petra, Jordan

This religion was likely referred to as “the religion of `Abdul-Muttalib” by Muhammad and his Muslims. This comes from Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 28:56 around the death of Muhammad’s uncle.

O Abu Talib, will you leave the religion of `Abdul-Muttalib

Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 28:56

“Abdul-Muttalib” could refer to Muhammad’s nominal father, a “slave of Allah” or an ancestral priest of Al Lah, Hubaal, Baal and Sin.

Ackbar, the Sun Goddess

Ackbar, the Sun goddess

The Prophet asked me at sunset, “Do you know where the sun goes (at the time of sunset)?”

I replied, “Allah and His Apostle know better.”

He said, “It goes (i.e. travels) till it prostrates Itself underneath the Throne and takes the permission to rise again, and it is permitted and then (a time will come when) it will be about to prostrate itself but its prostration will not be accepted, and it will ask permission to go on its course but it will not be permitted, but it will be ordered to return whence it has come and so it will rise in the west. And that is the interpretation of the Statement of Allah: ‘And the sun Runs its fixed course For a term (decreed). that is The Decree of (Allah) The Exalted in Might, The All- Knowing.'”

Sahih al-Bukhari 3199

And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

Koran 36:38

Note that the actual Sun, the star of our solar system, never prostrates and can’t prostrate. The Sun also never stops, in its rotation and burning of hydrogen. Prostration is a human ability, thus showing that in Muhammad’s words, the Sun is a goddess, a female divine being. She prostrates to Allah, the ruler, thus showing that Allah is above the Sun goddess and that because she is alone with Allah, in his personal space, Allah is her husband. The Quraysh likely had a more exalted position for Ackbar, the Sun goddess, than what Muhammad taught in the hadith, but so far, I’ve been unable to determine this, apart from concluding the sun goddess was Allah’s wife, mother to his three daughters.

The Sun and our solar system. Obviously, the Sun can’t prostrate to our Earth’s Moon.

The Daughters of Al Lah and Ackbar

Al Lat, Al Uzza and Manat, with their protector Lion

53:19 So have you considered al-Lat and al-‘Uzza? 20 And Manat, the third – the other one?

Satan tempted Muhammad to utter the following line:
These are the exalted gharāniq, whose intercession is hoped for.

Koran 53:19-20

(Never sent We a messenger or a prophet before thee…) [22:52]. The commentators of the Qur’an said:

When the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, saw that his people were shunning him, he was aggrieved by their rejection of the message he brought them and he secretly wished that Allah, exalted is He, reveals something to him which would bring him and his people closer to each other, keen as he was to see them accept faith. One day, he sat in one of the congregations of Quraysh which attracted a huge number of its members, and he wished that Allah, exalted is He, does not reveal to him on that day anything that might repel them from him.

Allah, exalted is He, revealed to him then Surah al-Najm (By the star when it stetteth…) [Surah 53].

The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, recited it but when he reached (Have ye thought upon al-Lat and al-‘Uzza, and Manat, the third, the other) [53:19-20], the devil put on his tongue what he had secretly wished and hoped for and said: “These are the mighty cranes (gharaniq) and their intercession is hoped for.”

When the Quraysh heard this, they were very pleased.

The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, carried on reciting until the end of the Surah and then prostrated. All the Muslims followed suit and prostrated, and all the idolaters who were present prostrated too. All those who were present, whether Muslim or disbeliever, prostrated except al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah and Abu Uhyahah Sa’id ibn al-‘As who were too advanced in age and could not prostrate, but they both grabbed a handful of dust and put their foreheads on it.

The Quraysh then dispersed, happy with what they heard. They said: “Muhammad has mentioned our idols with complimentary terms. We know that Allah gives life and takes it away, He creates and provides sustenance, but these idols of ours will intercede for us with Him. Now that Muhammad has associated them, we are all with him.”

That evening, Gabriel, peace be upon him, went to the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, and said: “What have you done? You recited to people that which I did not bring from Allah, glorified is He, and you said what I did not say to you.”

Tafsir Asbab Al-Nuzul by Al-Wahidi 22:52
Al Lat, Al Uzza, Lion, Allah (Al Lah, Hubaal, Baal and Sin) and Manat, with the Sun goddess in the background arch

Note that the Quraysh already prayed to these goddesses and to Ackbar as intercessors. Intercessors to who? Allah or Al Lah, the Moon god, is the chief god of the pantheon.

They call upon instead of Him none but female [deities],…

Koran 4:117

The above phrase is spoken by Muhammad (Allah is shown here as a powerless idol who can’t speak while Muhammad is speaking) and confirms that the Quraysh worshipped the female deities for intercession with Allah. This is further confirmed by later verses in Muhammad’s Koran:

But they have attributed to Allah partners – the jinn, while He has created them – and have fabricated for Him sons and daughters. Exalted is He and high above what they describe

Koran 6:100

And the polytheists assign to Allah from that which He created of crops and livestock a share and say, “This is for Allah,”

by their claim, “and this is for our partners [associated with Him].”

But what is for their “partners” does not reach Allah, while what is for Allah – this reaches their “partners.” Evil is that which they rule.

Koran 6:136

And shown in Koran 16:56-57 as “daughters”:

16:56 And they assign to what they do not know a portion of that which We have provided them. By Allah, you will surely be questioned about what you used to invent.

57 And they attribute to Allah daughters – exalted is He – and for them is what they desire.

Koran 16:56-57

Then Muhammad’s “angels” question the Quraysh in “Hell” with:

40:73 Then it will be said to them, “Where is that which you used to associate [with Him in worship] 74 Other than Allah?”

They will say, “They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything.”

Koran 40:73-74

Icons in the Kaaba

Orthodox icon with virgin Mary and baby Jesus

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

The Prophet entered the Ka`ba and found in it the pictures of (Prophet) Abraham and Mary. On that he said: “What is the matter with them ( i.e. Quraish)? They have already heard that angels do not enter a house in which there are pictures; yet this is the picture of Abraham. And why is he depicted as practicing divination by arrows?”

Sahih al-Bukhari 3351

Note that Allah and Jibril were unable to answer Muhammad’s question. No miracles in Islam.

It is narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah said:

I saw near the Ka’bah a man of fair complexion with straight hair, placing his hands on two persons. Water was flowing from his head or it was trickling from his head. I asked: “Who is he?”

They said: “He is Jesus son of Mary or al-Masih son of Mary.”

The narrator) says: “I do not remember which word it was.”

He (the Holy Prophet) said: “And I saw behind him a man with red complexion and thick curly hair, blind in the right eye. I saw in him the greatest resemblance with Ibn Qitan.” I asked: “Who is he?”

They replied: “It is al-Masih al-Dajjal.”

Sahih Muslim 169c

This might be a dream, as another hadith has:

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar:

Allah’s Messenger said. “While I was sleeping, I saw myself (in a dream) performing Tawaf around the Kaba. Behold, I saw a reddish-white man with lank hair, and water was dropping from his head. I asked, “Who is this?’

They replied, ‘The son of Mary.’

Then I turned my face to see another man with a huge body, red complexion and curly hair and blind in one eye. His eye looked like a protruding out grape.

They said (to me), He is Ad-Dajjal.”

The Prophet added, “The man he resembled most is Ibn Qatan, a man from the tribe of Khuzaa. “

Sahih al-Bukhari 7128

There’s more hadith about this dream of Muhammad at:

What was Muhammad dreaming about? Most likely depictions of Jesus in the Trinity and other icons in the Kaaba.

The Other Gods in Islam

“…the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it;…”

Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it;…

Koran 33:72

Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, “Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion.”

They said, “We have come willingly.”

Koran 41:11

84:1 When the sky has split [open] 2 And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] 3 And when the earth has been extended 4 And has cast out that within it and relinquished [it] 5 And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] –

Koran 84:1-5

These verses show that Muhammad thought the Heavens, Earth and Mountains were gods subordinate to Allah. In the Quraysh polytheism, these would be gods, perhaps comparable to the three daughters, but of no great importance to their daily lives.

Allah or Al Lah (Hubaal, Baal and Sin)

Allah, the dead, broken, stone idol, in Mecca, Petra, Jordan.

Allah is the rain god of the Quraysh, AKA Baal, an important function in the desert. For more, see Allah – Rain God? Allah was also Sin, the moon and cattle god of Ur, Mesopotamia. For more, see: Allah – Cattle God?

Before the idolators left Makkah for Badr, they clung to the curtains covering the Ka`bah and supplicated to Allah for victory, “O Allah! Give victory to the exalted among the two armies, the most honored among the two groups, and the most righteous among the two tribes.”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 8:19

Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 8:19, makes clear that the Quraysh (the idolaters) “supplicated to Allah for victory”. This confirms that Allah is the ruling god of the Quraysh pantheon, and points out that worship of Allah was normal in desperate situations.

But, Infidel, that’s just the Tafsir! And here’s the Koran in confirmation:

38:4 And they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, “This is a magician and a liar. 5 Has he made the gods [only] one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing.”

Koran 38:4-5

That’s Muhammad, reducing the many gods down to one god, just Allah. This “curious thing” shows Allah himself is merely an idol, like the rest.

Allah (Al Lah, Hubaal, Baal, Sin)

But perhaps you doubt that Allah is an impotent stone idol?

How can there be for the polytheists a treaty in the sight of Allah and with His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at al-Masjid al-Haram?

Koran 9:7

This verse shows that Allah is local, local to al-Masjid al-Haram, where Allah, the dead, broken, stone idol of the Quraysh and Muhammad, could “see” or have “sight” over the treaty. Naturally, a dead, broken, stone idol can’t “see” over or “sight” the treaty of the polytheists if the idol is not there. For more about Allah being a stone idol, see: Allah – Stone Idol?

Quraysh Polytheism

Al Lat, Al Uzza, Lion, Allah (Al Lah, Hubaal, Baal and Sin) and Manat, with Ackbar, the Sun goddess in the background arch

The Quraysh believed in Al Lat, Al Uzza, Manat, Lion, and Al Lah or Allah, as shown above. They didn’t need to be converted into believing in Allah alone. They already thought Allah was above sending a messenger like Muhammad:

When Allah sent Muhammad as a Messenger, most of the Arabs denied him and his message and said: “Allah is greater than sending a human Messenger like Muhammad.”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 10:1

The Quraysh expected Allah to send someone better than Muhammad, as Muhammad was plainly illegitimate and so not a priest of Allah. Muhammad contradicted the established religion with:

To Him is your return all together. [It is] the promise of Allah [which is] truth. Indeed, He begins the [process of] creation and then repeats it that He may reward those who have believed and done righteous deeds, in justice.

Koran 10:4

Quraysh One Life, No Repeats

One life, no repeats

The disbelievers (Quraysh) claimed that they will never be resurrected…

Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 10:53

“When we are dust, will we indeed be [brought] into a new creation?”

Excerpt, Koran 13:5

And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths [that] Allah will not resurrect one who dies.

Koran 16:38

23:82 They said, “When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 83 We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples.”

Koran 23:82-83

And they say, “When we are lost within the earth, will we indeed be [recreated] in a new creation?” …

Koran 32:10

And they say, “There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time.”

Koran 45:24

…they say, “Bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful.”

Koran 45:25

Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth (i.e., the deeds he did in this world, which await him in the Hereafter.) and the disbeliever will say, “Oh, I wish that I were dust!”

Koran 78:40

Quraysh Ancestor Worship/Remembrance

Moai, Easter Island

And when you have completed your rites, remember Allah like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance.

Koran 2:200

That’s Muhammad’s Muslim bandits practising the Quraysh Ancestor Worship or Remembrance, and Muhammad altering the rite.

Oblivion and Forgotten

“Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten.”

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree.

She said, “Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten.”

Koran 19:23

Contrary to what the Koran has about Islamic Paradise and Fire, “Oblivion” is being forgotten and destroyed as a person. This is a Quraysh belief from this Muslim woman, whom Muhammad records as being “Mary”. From this quote, you know that “Mary” is a local woman, pregnant and in pain, and not the actual Mary, the mother of Jesus. Thus, you know Muhammad is a liar and is Allah.

Ibn Abbas asked permission to visit Aisha before her death, and at that time she was in a state of agony.

She then said. “I am afraid that he will praise me too much.”

And then it was said to her, “He is the cousin of Allah’s Messenger and one of the prominent Muslims.”

Then she said, “Allow him to enter.”

(When he entered) he said, “How are you?”

She replied, “I am Alright if I fear (Allah).”

Ibn Abbas said, “Allah willing, you are Alright as you are the wife of Allah’s Messenger and he did not marry any virgin except you and proof of your innocence was revealed from the Heaven.”

Later on Ibn Az-Zubair entered after him and Aisha said to him, “IbnAbbas came to me and praised me greatly, but I wish that I was a thing forgotten and out of sight.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 4753

…but I wish that I was a thing forgotten and out of sight.”

Excerpt, Sahih al-Bukhari 4753

Notice that Aisha, at the time of her death, still believes in the pagan belief of oblivion, which was most likely passed down by the women of the Muslims.

Quraysh Idioms

There are some idioms from the Quraysh culture embedded in Muhammad’s Koran:

Frightened people will be “blue-eyed”

The blue-eyed woman is not frightened.

The Day the Horn will be blown. And We will gather the criminals, that Day, blue-eyed.

Koran 20:102

It has been said that this means having blue eyes due to the severity of their horrifying situation.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 20:102

This could be the wrong word choice by Muhammad. He probably meant “whites of their eye”, “wide-eyed” or “bulging-eyed”, due to fear. But it could be a Quraysh idiom, referring to the whites of the eyes showing when fearful. Either way, this is incoherent with the fact that blue-eyed people exist – a real god would have known this, but Allah didn’t, so Allah is false.

Souls not part of Quraysh Polytheism or Islam

The concept of a soul wearing a body and leaving after death is not in Islam or Quraysh polytheism

Also, note that “souls” aren’t part of Muhammad’s theology either. Whenever you see “soul” in an English translation of the Koran, Muhammad is referring to a literal physical person, not their essence or soul as in Judaism and Christianity, or to the consciousness of a person.
