Mysterious Letters?

These are the “Muqattaʿat“. There’s more about Muqattaʿat on Wikipedia at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muqattaʿat

Apostate Prophet has an easy-to-understand video on this topic on YouTube:

The Mysterious Letters in the Quran

As the Koran is supposedly the clear and perfect words of perfect Allah as recorded in perfect Allah’s perfect Qur’an, translated by Jibril into Classical Arabic, recited by Muhammad and written by Muhammad’s scribes, these mysterious letters should not exist in Muhammad’s Koran, as they are not clear and they are not English words and aren’t translatable to meaningful words in any language. Thus, this means that Muhammad’s recitation, Muhammad’s Koran, was created by Muhammad and his friends, and doesn’t come from Allah. This means that Allah is incoherent, incompetent, fictional, imaginary and false. This means Islamic doctrine and Islam are incoherent and thus false.

But, Infidel, what are they? I suggest they’re rhythm indicators, whose meaning has long since been lost and corrupted. In other words, when a musical group leader says, “1, 2, 3, 4”, they’re indicating the pace or beats of the music to their group. The mysterious letters indicate what Muhammad’s pace of recitation of his recitation, his Koran.

And why does Muhammad need these? Because he’s making his Koran chapters have a rhythm to them, which I go over in Islamic Fate?

Koran 7:1

Alif, Lam, Meem, Sad.

Koran 7:1

According to Al Tabari Tafsir, this means:

Allah Sucking

This is from Rob Christian, in one of his videos.

Koran 19:1

Kaf, Ha, Ya, ‘Ayn, Sad.

Koran 19:1

In Aramaic, K = 20, Ha = 5, Ya = 10, Ain= 70, Sad = 90 thus “JESUS is my God”.

Koran 36:1

Yā, Seen.

Koran 36:1

Ya, Seen, or Ya, Sin, seems to refer to Sin, the Bull god of Ur, that demonstrably flows into Muhammad’s Koran. The two letters are a call or invocation to Sin.

An alternative explanation is that it’s an admission by Muhammad (or a secretary) that “Allah is HUMAN”. In other words, Allah is Muhammad.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 2:1

For more about the Mysterious Letters, refer to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 2:1. It’s not much, but a lot of words, by the scholars, showing they don’t know what they mean.

Initials

Another explanation that I’ve seen recently is that the mysterious letters refer to the chapter’s source of memorisation, a person’s initial, or their name in short. Those chapters without mysterious letters or initials come from written sources – no one memorised them.

When Zayd ibn Tabit, at the order of ‘Utman, complied the Quran, he used several sources. For those Surahs which had either more than one source (or perhaps whose reading was supported by more than one source, as in the Greek New Testament), he acknowledged those sources by listing one letter abbreviations of them, in his perceived rank of importance. He was never inconsistent in his ranking of his sources, hence the order we can now find.

A New Investigation into the “Mystery Letters” of the Quran by Keith Massey

Later, I found several hadith that seem to show Muhammad using some of the Mysterious Letters:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr:

A man came to the Messenger of Allah and said: “Teach me to read the Qur’an, Messenger of Allah.”

He said: “Read three surahs which begin with A.L.R.”

He said: “My age is advanced, my mind has become dull (i.e. memory has grown weak), and my tongue has grown heavy).”

So he said: “Then read three surahs which begin with H.M.”

He repeated the same words.

So he said: “Read three surahs which begin with the ‘Glorification of Allah’.”

But he repeated the same excuse.

The man then said: “Teach me a comprehensive surah, Messenger of Allah.”

The Prophet taught him Surah (99), “When the Earth is shaken with her earthquake”.

When he finished it, the man said: “By Him Who sent you with truth, I shall never add anything to it.” Then man then went away.

The Prophet said twice: “The man received salvation.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 1399

The hadith is marked as “daif”.

Muhammad refers to:

  • Three surahs which begin with “A.L.R.”, but there are five, chapters 10, 11, 12, 14 & 15;
  • Three surahs which begin with “H.M.”, but there are six, chapters 40, 41 & 43-46;
  • Three surahs which begin with “Glorification of Allah”, but there are none!

I checked the other Mysterious Letters and got these:

‘Abdallah b. ‘Utba b. Mas’ud said that God’s Messenger recited at the sunset prayer H.M. ad-Dukhan (Al-Qur’an; 44).

Mishkat al-Masabih 867

I couldn’t find others.

These mentions of the mysterious letters could be inserted by the Muslim translators, who were referring to their written Korans, and they used the Mysterious Letters as abbreviations for the chapters.

Defending A Lion

Defending A Lion, on YouTube, points out that these letters are like the Talmud, and Muhammad was copying them for his own purposes:

Naturally, these mysterious letters show that the Koran isn’t from a real god, but is the creation of mere men, thus showing that Islam is false.
