Muhammad’s Idols

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:

I heard the Prophet describing the period of pause of the Divine Inspiration. He said in his talk:

While I was walking, I heard voices from the sky. I looked up, and behold! I saw the same Angel who came to me in the cave of Hira sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I was too much afraid of him (so I returned to my house) and said, “Fold me up in garments!”

They wrapped me up.

Then Allah revealed: ‘O you wrapped…and desert the idols before the prayer became compulsory.’

Rujz means idols.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4925

Abu Huraira said God’s messenger told that Gabriel came to him and said, “I came to you last night and was prevented from entering simply by the fact that there were images at the door, for there was a figured curtain with images on it and there was a dog in the house. So order that the head of the image which is at the door of the house be cut off so that it may become like the form of a tree; order that the curtain be cut up and made into two cushions spread out on which people may tread; and order that the dog be put out.”

God’s messenger then did so.
Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Mishkat al-Masabih 4501

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said:

Whoever makes an image will be commanded on the Day of Resurrection to breathe the soul into it but he will not be able to do so.

Sunan an-Nasa’i 5360

Narrated ‘Aishah:
that Jibril came to the Prophet with her image upon a piece of green silk cloth, and he said:

This is your wife in the world, and in the Hereafter.

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3880

Narrated ‘Aishah:
The Messenger of Allah used to sacrifice goat out of every fifty goats.

Abu Dawud said: Fara’ means the first baby camel born (to the Arabs). They used to sacrifice it for their idols, and then eat it, and its skin was thrown on a tree. ‘Atira was a sacrifice made during the first ten days of Rajab.

Sunan Abi Dawud 2833

Narrated `Urwa:

I asked Aisha (regarding the Sai between As Safa and Al-Marwa). She said:

Out of reverence to the idol Manat which was placed in Al-Mushailal, those who used to assume Ihram in its name, used not to perform Sai between As-Safa and Al-Marwa, so Allah revealed: ‘Verily! The As-Safa and Al-Marwa (two mountains at Mecca) are among the symbols of Allah.’ (K2:158). Thereupon, Allah’s Messenger and the Muslims used to perform Sai (between them).

Sufyan said: The (idol) Manat was at Al-Mushailal in Qudaid.

Aisha added, “The Verse was revealed in connection with the Ansar. They and (the tribe of) Ghassan used to assume lhram in the name of Manat before they embraced Islam.”

Aisha added:

There were men from the Ansar who used to assume lhram in the name of Manat which was an idol between Mecca and Medina. They said, “O Allah’s Messenger! We used not to perform the Tawaf (Sai) between As-Safa and Al-Marwa out of reverence to Manat.”
