Koran – Lower Your Wing

Muhammad uses a local idiom “lower your wing” to command charity and kindness to your parents and other Muslims.

Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them [i.e., the disbelievers], and do not grieve over them.

And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to the believers.

Koran 15:88

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.”

Koran 17:24

And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to those who follow you of the believers.

Koran 26:215

Notice the assistance by the translators: “[i.e., show kindness]” to assist the reader in understanding the local idiom of Muhammad: “lower your wing”.

Could Muhammad have avoided this? Yes, see these examples in the Koran:

Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech – in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.
