85:1 By the sky containing great stars
2 And [by] the promised Day
3 And [by] the witness and what is witnessed,
4 Destroyed [i.e., cursed] were the companions of the trench (Or “May they be destroyed” or “cursed.” The “companions of the trench” (or ditch) were agents of a tyrannical king who refused to allow his people to believe in Allah. Their evil deed in obedience to their ruler earned for them the curse of Allah.)
5 [Containing] the fire full of fuel, 6 When they were sitting near it.
7 And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses. (After casting the believers into a trench filled with fire, they sat at its edge, watching them burn to death. This event occurred before the time of Prophet Muḥammad)
8 And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy, 9 To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness (i.e., never absent, always seeing and having complete knowledge of everything within His dominion.).
10 Indeed, those who have tortured (Or, in this instance, the literal meaning of “burned” is also appropriate.) the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.
Koran 85:1-10
Muhammad spoke about Allah in the third person. This means this passage is not the perfect words of the perfect Qur’an from perfect Allah. Thus, Allah is false, imaginary, and fictional, which means Islamic doctrine and Islam are nonsensical and false.
Muhammad, in his Koran, addresses a sentence, verse, or passage to “Anonymous They”, with “they”, “them”, “he”, “your”, “the people”, and so on, without naming them. For more, read Anonymous They.
Muhammad lied: “[to Allah] belongs”, “Allah created”, “Allah knows”, “dominion”, “Lord over” or “Lord of” “the heavens and the earth”. Obviously, Allah doesn’t create, own, know, have, or have dominion over the heavens and the earth, because our Earth is IN the universe and is always a part of the universe, not separate from the “heavens”. These phrases show that Muhammad was describing what was above, “heavens” and what was below, “earth”, which is a Flat Earth worldview. Thus, Allah is imaginary, fictional, and false, which means Islamic doctrine and Islam are nonsensical and false.
Notice “Allah” swearing by the tiny things of his creation:
- sky;
- great stars;
- promised Day;
- witness;
- what is witnessed.
No real god needs to swear by the tiny things in its creation. Only a liar needs to swear by the LARGE (to him) things of this universe.
Who is the “witness”?
Infidel, it’s Allah! Then who is swearing by Allah?
Infidel, Muslims swear by Allah! Then obviously Muhammad, the FIRST Muslim, is speaking this, not Allah. Thus, you know that the words of this passage are, like the rest, all spoken by Muhammad, not by a real god. Obviously, this is Muhammad, swearing by Allah and what Allah supposedly witnesses – showing that Allah is not the creator of the Koran or of the “witnesses”, thus showing Allah is inside Muhammad, not external to Muhammad.

What are the “great stars” or “Buruj”? In one translation, “Buruj” means “constellation”. In another translation of the Koran, I’ve seen “zodiacal signs”. Let’s see what the scholars of Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 85:1, have to say:
the giant stars
Al-Buruj are the stars.
The beautiful creation.
it means the positions of the sun and the moon, which are twelve Buruj
The sun travels through each one of these “Burj” (singular of Buruj) in one month. The moon travels through each one of these Burj in two-and-a-third days, which makes a total of twenty-eight positions, and it is hidden for two nights.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 85:1
So, the “Buruj” probably does mean the signs of the Zodiac. These are imaginary; they are the lines we draw between bright stars in the night sky. For example, the constellations of the Northern Hemisphere:

Where did Muhammad get these ideas of a zodiac and houses? Not from observing the night sky by himself. But from his doctor companion, who was educated in Syria by Greeks. This shows that the “Buruj” Muhammad was taught:

You can see the variety of translations of “Buruj” in the Quranic Arabic Corpus:
- Pickthall: mansions of the stars;
- Yusuf Ali: Zodiacal Signs;
- Shakir: mansions of the stars;
- Muhammad Sarwar: constellations;
- Mohsin Khan: holding the big stars;
- Arberry: constellations.
These varieties of translations show that Koran translations are incoherent and false, showing that the Koran can’t be translated accurately, so the Koran is local, which means Allah is local to Muhammad, so Islam is false. So now you know what Muhammad (and Allah) were swearing by, the drawings on this map (or similar to those of the time) of the sky. Let’s just emphasise again that these constellations, these “buruj”, these zodiac signs are imaginary, they’re created by humans, not by ANY god, they’re lines drawn by human scholars, primitive astronomers, astrologers, linking the stars, the “points” of light in the night sky.
But, Infidel, Allah is framing this in human terms so we can understand! But, no, that’s false. This is because Allah doesn’t describe grouping and groups of stars in His Koran. So, we’re to understand these terms, this knowledge, not of Muslims or Muhammad, but from pagans, ancient peoples who worshipped MANY gods. Thus, Allah depends upon polytheism and false gods, and thus is false himself. So, Islam, Muhammad and the Koran are false.
Who is the first Muslim?
Infidel, it’s Muhammad, the FIRST Muslim! Then who are the believers in the trench? Thus, you know that either those people in the “trench” were not Muslims or it’s some other religion. If you read Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 85:1, you’ll find that these people in the “trench” were early Christians and their “Lord” was GOD, not Allah, despite the writers trying to conflate GOD with Allah. This is admitted to by the writers with:
Then, after Ibn Ishaq explained that the people of Najran began following the religion of the boy after his murder, which was the religion of Christianity
Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 85:1
Notice especially the miracles of the “boy” – you know Allah doesn’t give miracles – that’s because Allah is imaginary and a stone idol. Also, note that the behaviour of the “believers” does not match that of Muslims; they’re not Muslims, they’re Christians.
And if you continue reading the passage, the speaker is obviously Muhammad. Thus, you know the Koran comes from Muhammad, that Muhammad is Allah, and Allah is Muhammad, and so the Koran and Islam are false. Worse, if we believe Muhammad, then those believers go to Heaven, Christian Heaven, and it’s Muslims who go to “Hell” and face “the punishment of the Burning Fire”.
And again, this punishment seems to show that being Christian is good and being Muslim is bad.
The best replacement for this passage is: “”, the empty sentence.
