Have you not considered the assembly of the Children of Israel after [the time of] Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs, “Send to us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allah”?
He said, “Would you perhaps refrain from fighting if fighting was prescribed for you?”
They said, “And why should we not fight in the cause of Allah when we have been driven out from our homes and from our children?”
But when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, except for a few of them.
And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
Koran 2:246
This is obviously from Muhammad, not from Allah. What perfect god would forget the name of his prophet? Muhammad is saying this: “a prophet of theirs”, not Allah. According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 2:246, this is supposedly Samuel, and it’s about the battle with the Amalekites in the book of Samuel. Contrary to Muhammad, the one battle that Samuel was in, was a massive success for Samuel and his people the Israelites. Perhaps Muhammad was confused here?
This is likely referring to Muhammad encouraging his Muslims to fight against their own tribe, that tribe that cast them out for their own evil behaviours. Also, note that the words of supposed Israelis and the un-named prophet are considered to be the literal words of Allah here, showing the challenge of a surah like it has been completed by Muhammad already.
As such this verse should be replaced with: “”, the empty sentence.
